Bristol Indymedia Film: Mission Against Terror
(Mon 6th / 7.30pm / £3/4 though nobody turned away for lack of funds)
MISSION AGAINST TERROR, a documentary about terrorism against Cuba and the case of the Cuban Five, written and directed by Bernie Dwyer and
Roberto Ruiz Rebo. English/Spanish with subtitles. The film will be
followed by a discussion led by a speaker from the Cuba Solidarity
Campaign national executive.
Since 1959 more than 3000 innocent Cuban civilians have been killed in terrorist attacks organised in the USA with the complicity of Washington.
As Havana wakes up to another day, five Cuban men are serving their time in prisons scattered throughout the United States. Their crime?
Protecting their country and people against terrorism by monitoring
right-wing terrorist groups in Miami.
In June 1998 the Cuban authorities gave information to the FBI about the US based groups and the activities they planned against Cuba. However, instead of arresting the terrorists, the FBI arrested the five Cubans who had provided much of the information. They were subjected to a trial which US civil rights lawyer, Leonard Weinglass, calls a “violation”
from start to finish, and were locked away for a total of three life
sentences plus 68 years. Their trial took place in Miami, an environment entirely hostile to the accused – it is widely accepted that the
anti-Castro Cuban-American community in Miami wields enormous political influence. There are very few cases that are political by their nature. This was one.
“Mission against terror” charts Cuba's 45-year struggle against
terrorism and the five men's fight to win justice.
Organised in conjunction with Bristol Cuba Solidarity group.
