Charles Laughton’s spellbinding gothic noir, The Night Of The Hunter, has become one of the greatest, most influential directorial debuts in movie history. It’s a film of stylized shadows, florid dialogue and warped perspectives and it features one of the great movie villains in Robert Mitchum’s silky murderous preacher, who pursues two innocent children through the Ohio River Valley to get his tattooed hands on their daddy's loot. When this monstrous figure of pure evil takes over the impoverished family, the children flee down the river, finding a haven in the home of a kind, elderly woman (Lillian Gish, goodness incarnate).

The Night Of The Hunter had a lukewarm reception on release and Charles Laughton never actually directed another picture, but in the intervening decades, the world has come to love the film's sense of a fairytale America, with wolves at the riverside.
A dark fairy tale full of unforgettable imagery, not to be missed!
