To many of us in the West the existence of a musical genre in Zambia that drew its inspiration from Black Sabbath and Hendrix as well as James Brown and the indigenous sounds of afro-beat remains sadly unappreciated despite the release of this film in 2019.
We Intend To Cause Havoc follows the formation of Zambia’s most popular rock band W.I.T.C.H. and 'Zam(bian)rock' of the 1970s in general and documents the life of W.I.T.C.H.'s lead singer, Jagari, whose name is an Africanisation of Mick Jagger’s. Through the resurrection of a music that was forgotten by many and unheard by most, the film explores the life of a former African rockstar, and the excitement around the rediscovery of his music by a new generation of Western fans.
W.I.T.C.H. Will perform next month in this city: you can buy tickets from Headfirst here.
