Michael Thieke and Luigi Marino bring their duo for the first time to Bristol as part of their 6 concert UK tour to present the release of Native Languages of Nowhere on Emergent Idioms. For the Swansea and Bristol dates, they will be joined by the extraordinary Rhodri Davies!

Rhodri Davies is immersed in the worlds of improvisation, musical experimentation, composition and contemporary classical performance. He plays harp, electric harp, live-electronics and builds wind, water, ice, dry ice and fire harp installations and has released six solo albums. His regular groups include: HEN OGLEDD, Cranc, Common Objects and a duo with John Butcher. He has worked with the following artists: David Sylvian, Jenny Hval, Derek Bailey, Sofia Jernberg, Lina Lapelyte, Pat Thomas, Simon H Fell and Will Gaines.

The Berlin-based clarinetist/composer/performer Michael Thieke is equally at home across a broad range of musical environments, such as experimental song forms, collectively composing projects, improvising collectives, and music on the fringes of jazz. He is exploring the minutiae of sound, timbre and noise, with a particular interest in microtonality and related sound phenomena. The qualities of slowness are another field of his research. He has a preference for long-term collaborations and collective work. 

Luigi Marino is a musician based in Bristol. His work focuses on networks able to display relationships between human and nonhuman actors, and especially on how intuitive decisions can derail a pre-existing order. He is an active improvisor performing on both electronic media and percussion, in particular zarb and bowed custom cymbals extended with DIY portable circuits.

Celeste Cantor-Stephens and Kalun Leung, based in Bristol and Montreal/NYC, respectively, join for this improvised set of trumpet and trombone, sound objects, and physical and sonic mutations. 

Leung and Cantor-Stephens met at NY’s Creative Music Studio, a hotbed for musical experimentation, founded by Karl Berger and Ornette Coleman, and this broad-minded approach to improvisation informs their work. With distant flickers of performance practices drawn from oral music traditions to contemporary experimentation, the duo will explore new, ephemeral sonic truths and rituals.

Oliver Brouwer is a composer, singer and pianist based in Bristol. Over the last seven years he has written and recorded five collections of solo piano works. With each shared, an ever changing expression and response to a personal experience of memory and time, stillness and movement. 

He is particularly inspired by the creative spark of improvisation, which touches both his set pieces and his expansive and uninhibited improvisations. His performances are touched by a vulnerability and tension through his skill in recreating every piece every time he plays it.
