BREAKING OPEN

How we live:

I look into my face in the square glass.

Under it, a bright flow of cold water.

At once, a strong arrangement of presences:

I am holding a small glass

under the little flow

(From BREAKING OPEN by Muriel Rukeyser)

In our first film night at The Cube we are bringing together three works which invite the viewer into intimate encounters with internal worlds, the screen becomes a skin which is touched, is touching. The audience becomes a co-conspirator, complicit in the construction of these spaces and presences which are arranged between the real and the imagined. Like three islands these filmic landscapes are connected underneath.

Valentina Alvarado Matos is a Venezuelan visual artist based in Barcelona. Her work has been presented at exhibitions and festivals such as Salzburger Kunstverein, Fabra i Coats, Arts Santa Mònica, Viennale, Rotterdam, L´Alternativa, Oberhausen, Punto de Vista Festival, Ambulante, XCentric, SFCinemateque, S8, Loop, Matadero, Filmoteca de Cataluña, among others.

She has done artistic residencies at La Escocesa, Fora de Camp, LIFT, Matadero, and Hangar.

Manuela De Noguez is an artist and filmmaker based in Mexico City. At first glance, her work carries aesthetic and pleasure claims; however, it is performative in its presentation and conceptual in its purpose. The work revolves around a quest to locate and isolate concepts that are built around tangible elements, and then create abstractions that regenerate the image and positions it in new formations, creating new virtual spaces. Her practice is a meditation on physical presence, inspired by the simplicity of expression, the economics of a proposal and the place of exhibition. Her films Viveros, The Exponential Nature of Images and Le Visible et L’invisible where shown at Jihlava IDFF, Milwaukee UFF and Antimatter FF.

Apichatpong Weerasethakul lives in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Blurs the lines between cinema and contemporary art. His films, installations, and videos are non-linear, evoking otherworldliness and dislocation. Manipulating time and light, Weerasethakul connects reality and myth, the individual and collective, and the tangible and surreal. Using recurring actors allows him to explore aging and memory. Often set in rural Thai locations, his works invite viewers into a realm of deep yearning and myth. Rejecting conventional narratives, he plays with time and truth, creating an artistic world of his own. Honored with the Chevalier de l’ordre des arts et des lettres and Officier de l’ordre des arts et des lettres awards, he has earned acclaim and festival prizes, including the Cannes Film Festival's Palme d’Or in 2010.
