We devour and chase ourselves
Leaving all that’s been
On the road of no return

Oroubourous is a night of storytelling through music, spoken word and moving image, invoking timeless landscapes and worlds unborn.

Algy Behrens meanders through different forms and traditions playing flamenco, folk, soundscapes and samples, bossa and blues to name a few, all set to a journey of original videos and animations. Emmy brings her magical harp which she weaves around the rhythms and textures of her new musical companion, percussionist Alex. Her playing fuses French Impressionist styles, jazz harmonies and West African riffs. Iwan Kushka performs pieces from his latest book 'For Nobody' - a man in no hurry is going nowhere fast. Integrated spoken word and music, with a cheeky tongue and a steady groove

Artist Info:

Emmy the harp: Emmy has been playing the the harp from when she was a young child. Since then she has developed many different styles including French Impressionist, Jazz and West African music inspired by the kora. She has played in orchestras, given solo classical concerts and has followed the traditional European Harp route. Since moving to Bristol she has collaborated with a plethora of artists from different musical traditions including Jimmy Galvin, Edson Burton, Pete Bearder and Boci. She’s performed in theatre shows shows such as  Outlier with Malaika Kegode and Jakabol at the Bristol Old Vic. Emmy’s work is inspired by dancers, storytellers, festival jams, song circles and forest schools. This performance at the Cube is the premiere of a new collaboration with Alex Goodchild.

Alex Goodchild: Alex Goodchild learned drum kit throughout school but was introduced to West African percussion while at university, which he felt more of an affinity for than the kit. He has since spent time learning percussion with masters from Griot families of Ivory Coast and Guinea. Compelled by Manding culture and its traditional music,Alex plays dun duns, djembe and calabash gourds in various configurations to produce rhythms clearly influenced by the culture of these instruments, but woven in a structure more typically heard on drum kits.

Iwan Kushka: FOR NOBODY. Spoken words with improvisational music, A listening experience.Written and performed by Devon-based storyteller/poet Iwan Kushka, this show is for and about Nobody.  Iwan has performed to packed audiences in Bristol over the last decade and he's back for the first time after the lockdowns. His book and the live-show are very much creations from that time period: remember those dark winter nights of 2020, when nobody came to visit?

Algy Behrens: Algy has been performing, teaching and producing music for over 20 years. With a diversity of influences, from flamenco guitar, oud, west African guitar, Brazilian samba, African percussion, banjo and many others, he weaves his sonic tapestry to create soundscapes with pulsing rhythmic grooves and tender songs that speak to the depths of what it is to be human in these challenging times. His music seems to defy boundaries of tradition or origin, swimming seamlessly between many places, an in between that invokes a prayer for unity Algy is also a visual artist and video editor and for this show he will be combining visuals to create an immersive ambient set spanning his many influences. Expect to be transported and dislocated into a beautiful and haunting world of found sounds, travels, reflections, songs and spoken word. For half the set he will be joined by bassist and accordionist Joe Evans
