Scientist Dr John Markway (Richard Johnson) invites three strangers to Hill House, an imposing and supposedly haunted mansion with a history of tragic deaths, in order to conduct investigations into possible psychic phenomena between its sinisterly skewed walls. Among them is meek Eleanor Lance (Julie Harris), chosen for her experience with a poltergeist when she was a child, and who now suffers from severe guilt following the death of her mother. As darkness falls and things start to go bump in the night with increasing intensity, are the ghosts of the house about to claim their next victim? Named by Martin Scorsese as one of the scariest horror films of all time, Robert Wise’s superlative adaptation of Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House is perhaps the single greatest haunted house movie committed to film, its emphasis on the unseen (but certainly not unheard) a lasting testament to the power of the imagination to conjure feelings of terror in the night, in the dark.
