Three years after Suspiria, Dario Argento returned to his Three Mothers storyline with a similarly baroque supernatural horror film, this time located in New York City. Poet Rose Elliot (Irene Miracle) discovers an ancient book which leads her to suspect her apartment building may be playing host to the Mother of Darkness, one of the three evil sisters which rule over the world. Together with her music student brother Mark (Leigh McCloskey), her further investigations lead her into a dark and deadly world of suspicious antiques dealers, gloved killers and sinister-looking cats.

Showcasing all of Argento’s then well-established trademarks – elaborately grisly set-pieces, fiendish logic-defying plot twists and slightly ropey acting – and boasting both visual effects from his equally-legendary mentor Mario Bava and a thunderous synth-heavy score from Keith Emerson, this is one of the aesthetic high points of the Italian master of horror’s work.
