Best known as one of the unsung heroes in the American indy acting circle, Liev Schreiber here turns out a fine debut as writer and director. Trimming down Jonathan Safran Foer's epic tome to the events of recent history, the film follows Froer (played by erstwhile hobbit Elijah Wood) in his quest to find the woman who saved his grandfather during World War II in a Ukrainian village, that was ultimately razed by the Nazis, with the help of a local who speaks weirdly funny broken English. Despite the weight of the subject matter, the film is light and witty whilst never avoiding the complexities of the holocaist, and the roots of racism in European society both then and now.
