MIDNIGHT MOVIE: PATHS OF GLORY
Stanley Kubrick / 1957 / USA / 89 mins / digital / cert PG
(Fri 10th / midnight / £4/3)

Kubrick's fourth feature film is considered by many to be his first
masterpiece. Harnessing the powerful visual skills he developed in early noir pot-boilers such as THE KILLING the story of a failed attack on a military target and a subsequent court martial lays bare the futility and irony of war, and sets forth a mission statement about the human condition that was to preoccupy the director for many years to come.

Kirk Douglas, in the best and most important role of his career, plays Colonel Dax, the idealistic everyman who attempts to maintain dignity for his men in the face of the dehumanising power of war, and whose sense of justice struggles to prevail in the mock court martial where three innocent men are tried for cowardice. Filled with memorable images, this is filmmaking at its finest. Unmissable!
