(Claudia Llosa / Peru / 2008 / 95 minutes)

Claudia Llosa's second feature, Milk of Sorrow (LA TETA ASUSTADA) was nominated for an Oscar and won Berlin's Golden Bear last year...written and directed by the Peruvian female director, the film was inspired by anthropological research into a phenomenon called the "Milk of Sorrow". In this study testimonies of women who were mistreated or violated during the political violence that took place in the Andean highlands in the 1980s refer to an illness "la Teta Asustada", which is the trauma experienced by women who were raped by members of the Maoist group Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path) passed on to their children through breast milk.

Whilst the film is about sexual violence, it never takes place on screen and is poignant depiction of the suffering of an individual, and the collective ordeals of the nation.

Fausta (Magaly Solier) has found a way of protecting herself both physically and emotionally to ensure that she doesn't suffer the same fate as her mother. When her mother dies, Fausta is forced to make decisions that will impact on how she considers and makes sense of her past. Solier gives a mesmeric performance as the troubled Fausta, whose story is told against a mapping of the rituals of the community in which she lives.
