Four desperate men on the run from troubled circumstances at home escape separately to Porvenir, an impoverished and remote village in South America in the grip of economic exploitation by a large American oil conglomerate. When one of the company’s oil wells explodes, the men form a ragtag group to take on the potentially lucrative task of transporting nitroglycerin to the site. But the journey will be laced with unrelenting peril, not just thanks to the unforgiving jungle terrain they must cross with their hazardous cargo, but so too from their conflicting combustible personalities.

After the success of both The French Connection and The Exorcist, William Friedkin’s big budget re-imagining of The Wages of Fear proved to be both a critical and commercial failure, but is now increasingly regarded as one of the last great masterpieces of the New Hollywood of the 1970s. Featuring an unforgettable score by Tangerine Dream and led by one Roy Scheider's greatest performances, it serves as both a nerve-jangling suspense thriller and an existential ride into the pitch-black heart of darkness.

"An audacious and nail-biting thrillride, even though you know the outcome." ***** Little White Lies
