Celebrated Japanese director and favourite of the Cube Hirokazu Kore-eda (Our Little SisterStill Walking) returns with a powerful story of family ties remade, drawing more deeply than ever on his personal memories and experiences. Dwelling on his past glory as a prize-winning author, Ryota (Hiroshi Abe) wastes the money he makes as a private detective on gambling and can barely pay his child support. After the death of his father, his ageing mother Yoshiko (legendary actress Kirin Kiki) and his beautiful ex-wife Kyoko (Yoko Maki) seem to be moving on with their lives. Renewing contact with his initially distrusting family, Ryota struggles to take back control of his existence and to find a place in the life of his young son Shingo (Taiyo Yoshizawa)—until a stormy summer night offers them a chance to truly bond again.

By turns funny, melancholy and prescient, Kore-eda's drama is - as you would expect - gorgeously photographed and performed and definitively humane, revealing moments of unanticipated beauty thrown into relief by everyday life.

"the kind of film that leaves an imprint on your soul" ★★★★★ Little White Lies

"There is such intelligence and delicacy in Kore-eda’s film-making, such wit and understated humanity" ★★★★ Guardian

"finds poetry in the flotsam of life" ★★★★★ Telegraph
