LAURENT LA GAMBA

Photographs taken from the 'Pro-cryptic Installations in a supermarket
series" (Dec. 2001 - Nov. 2002)
Colour photograph, acrylic on protective suit.
Using the prism of camouflage, Laurent's research project. merges the
human figure with Western society's supermarkets and huge malls.
Photographic process shows the different visual staged setting chosen in
each supermarket space, with it's heavily marketed design to attract the
consumer. These photographic manipulations depict the growing influence of
Western consumer displays on the design of human urban consumer spaces.
The range offered by western consumer spaces enables the artist to feed on
the specificity of this consumer eco-system, using the camouflage process
(pro-cryptic installations) to underline how these different visual
environments are pictorially and symbolically meaningful.
The outcome is a visual testimony to consumerism through "Pro-cryptic
photography" and provides a glimpse of current society's behaviour.
These ephemeral installations were carried out in the most representative
of urban consumer spaces in Western countries.
The presentation of the "Pro-cryptic Installation in a Supermarket"
project consists in a comparative display including all the different
places where the photographs were taken. The main goal was to combine
space had the power to influence or dissolve these differences and promote
a general and consensual attitude of the consumer.
