Playing the Race Card

La Haine

Dir: Mathieu Kassovitz, 1995, France, Cert: 15

-
Sun 23 April 2017 // 16:00

Tickets: £5 (full) / £4 (concession)

Mathieu Kassovitz's fearless tale of youth in the Parisian banlieue in the mid 1990s. Whilst La Haine was met with widespread critical acclaim, the French police turned their back on the cast & crew at that year's Cannes, perceiving the film as delivering an anti-Police message. With Marine Le Pen's right wing nationalist party Front National leading election polls in France we revisit the film that prompted her father (and former Front National leader Jean-Marie Le Pen) to call for jail terms for "these yobs".

Featuring electric performances from Vincent Cassel, Hubert Koundé and Saïd Taghmaoui.

Screening as part of the "Playing the Race Card" weekend, and programmed by Fin Taylor.
