Susan is a photographer who spends most of her time snapping Bar Mitzvahs and babies while Anne is an aspiring writer who manages to get by. The best of friends until one of them gets a break and the other falls in love, these two women must learn how to be alone after sharing so much together. A timeless story of enduring friendship and the challenges of life.
We're excited to have the chance to finally screen this truly forgotten gem from a 16mm print as part of Scalarama 2015. Long before the phenomenon of Girls (2012-) and Frances Ha (2012) Girlfriends explores the confusion and co-dependency of female friendships with a singular poignancy and humour that is distinctly rooted in its New York setting. A favourite of Stanley Kubrick's who praised its sincerity and believable characterisation, the film was recently rediscovered when it was included in Lena Dunham’s "Hey Girlfriend" season of films at BAM, New York, in 2011.
"When I saw Girlfriends, it felt like the film had been made just for me" Greta Gerwig
Girlfriends is the second feature of a Sunday double bill exploring female friendships on screen. The first film of the evening will be L'UNE CHANTE, L'AUTRE PAS. Tickets for the double bill are £8 / £6. An automatic discount will be applied at the checkout if buying online.
